How it works

  1. Pick your files.Pick one or more PDFs.
  2. Your phone does the work.Your phone reads the text, headings and pictures on each page.
  3. Save the result.Save the Word file and open it in Word, Pages or Google Docs.

What comes across

Thumbs PDF reads where every line of text sits on the page, how big and how bold it is, and rebuilds it as a Word document you can edit:

  • Headings become real Word headings, so the navigation pane works.
  • Paragraphs flow as normal text instead of a box per line, with words broken by a hyphen joined back up.
  • Bullet lists become Word bullet lists. Bold and italics are kept.
  • Pictures land where they were, and each PDF page starts a new page.
  • Two-column layouts, like papers and newsletters, are read one column at a time.

Best for text documents

Letters, reports, contracts, CVs and essays convert well. Pages with complex designs, text over pictures, or tables can need tidying afterwards: tables come over as lines of text rather than Word tables. For tables, try PDF to Excel.

A scanned PDF is a picture of each page with no text inside. Those pages are read with OCR (text recognition, on your device), so their text comes across as text you can edit. Check it for small mistakes, especially in tables. The first scan loads the text reader, about 4 MB plus the language.

Questions

Will it look exactly like the PDF?

Close, not identical. A PDF fixes every letter to a spot on the page; a Word file flows text. You get the same words, headings, lists and pictures, in a layout you can edit.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. Scanned pages are read with OCR on your device, so you get editable text. A sharp, straight scan reads best; pages with no readable text come over as pictures.

Can I convert a PDF with a password?

Yes. You are asked for the password when you add it. The Word file has no password.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser. Load this page, turn on airplane mode, and it still works.
